It's a snowy day here in Virginia; which for us is a great time to stop and enjoy completed projects (or almost complete!)and share the results of a mother/daughter room makeover collaboration. Recently, Mom and Courtney teamed up to tackle updating Courtney's room; which up until 2 months ago was still a tween shrine of pink and zebra prints. Their goal was to make it more age appropriate {she's a mature 16 yrs of age now} and reflective of where she is in this season of her ever-evolving style preferences. Sometimes we don't know where to begin...but thankfully both ladies got "on the same page" with a vision for a vintage/shabby chic room transformation that utilized pieces from our family's past with lots of character and charm. It was a decorating adventure; to be sure, but in the end they were were very pleased with the outcome! Come in and have a look!
Courtney: There comes a time when every girl would like to transition out of their magical princess room into something more suitable for a young woman. For me, this change started abruptly but was postponed for a good 5 months. But after all that waiting, I blinked and we had transformed the room in 3 days! When my beloved “Poppy” passed away this past summer my mom offered me some of my favorite décor from his house along with the bedroom suite that occupied his guest room. Or as I liked to call it, my room, for I had spent many nights there during the years that he lived 10 minutes from us. We decided we would finally redo my princess castle into something that now suited my inner queen bee status. *finally!*
I centered all my decisions for this new room around my bedroom suite (bed, armoire, and vanity) and the rug I got from Poppy’s dining room. I loved the earthy boho tones in the rug and the classic vintage furniture. I knew I needed a light colored wall to go with all the dark colors of my furniture and rug along with gold accents. Credit to mom for pushing me to this paint color that I now love so much (Sherwin Williams- Pediment)! We knew we would have to buy a bedspread; but mom and I didn’t quite see eye-to-eye on what it should look like. I came across this beauty at Tuesday Morning and knew I had to have it. However, mom was pushing for a cream one she had already purchased. But at last, she graciously returned it and took this one to get altered for only $10!
Mama D: This bedroom suite originally belonged to Courtney’s great aunt; but served as my bedroom suite until I was married. It then became the guest bedroom furnishings for my mom and dad’s house; and has now found a new home with Courtney! I am so pleased it has stayed in the family. I gave Courtney an old table runner to protect the top of the vanity so she wouldn't run the risk of ruining it with makeup. The vanity seat will eventually be re-uphosltered - one step at a time, right?
Courtney: One thing I love most about the room transformation is “my own little corner." The chair and pillows came from Poppy’s “computer room”, and the shelves came from our garage {you never know what will come out of there}. We found some old ceiling paint to paint them all one shade of white and then towel-rubbed a vintage stain onto them. The various cameras came from my Dad’s father, “Granddaddy”, yet another grandparent who I absolutely adored. The other décor you see on the shelves is either from Poppy’s or was found in our basement. The silk flowers add a bohemian touch, which I love!
The above fashionista corner wouldn’t be complete without the gorgeous green chest that sat in Nana and Poppy’s guest room. The hanging branch with clothes came from a Pinterest idea, and we just so happen to have a branch in the garage left over from Whitney’s wedding photo booth already complete with rope and ready to hang! The black wire dress form was left over from my previous princess years and was a perfect fit for this "fashion inspiration" corner. This nifty space is completed with my trademark splash of gold in the frames placed by the chest.
The big golden mirror was something my sweet mother finally allowed me to use; and I have to say that I was thrilled to get it! Also from Nana and Poppy’s it’s perfect to hang above one of the benches Poppy built. The red nightstand was a TJ Maxx find that I almost passed up, but after much insisting from my mom I gave it a try and now love the pop of drama it adds!
While I still hope to hang painted deer antlers for a touch of rustic chic and find the perfect pillows for my bed, I consider this room makeover a success! Mom and I had a lot of fun discovering the wonderful treasures in our basement and attic, and I know my dad was thrilled he didn’t have to buy more than what he would say to be "a new cover and a slab of paint!" Just think, you may have a new room waiting to be discovered. So what's in your attic or basement?
