Did y’all like my post title? I enjoy coming up with cheesy play-on-words more than I probably should....
I’m SO excited about this post because I’ve been waiting and waiting to share about my dark bedroom! Unfortunately it was (and in some areas still is) a work in progress and wasn’t completed in a short amount of time. When we first bought out first (and current) home, I loved the mint-ish green color in the upstairs bedrooms. And at first I didn’t mind how our bedroom décor (that we had purchased to match our previous apartment) paired with the color because I was so focused on re-painting and decorating the rest of the house.
However, one day I realized that I didn’t actually enjoy our bedroom. I didn’t want to just “hang out” in there; and sadly, I even decided that it was my least favorite room in the house! Not a good thing. I think your bedroom should be at least ONE of your favorite rooms in your home; if not your most favorite. You should go to sleep loving it and wake up loving it. So I knew it was time for a change!
I don’t remember how or when I first decided to go for a dark bedroom color {my Pinterest room inspiration was a big influence}; but I DO know that I was excited and determined to do so. Soon I had my sweet husband on board as well; that is, he was "on board" until we spent forever trying to choose a color in Sherwin Williams and then started painting at 7 o’clock one evening because I was sooooooo eager to see how it would look.
We ended up choosing a dark blue shade called "Midnight Hour." The first coat went up and it looked like we were in Ariel’s grotto under the sea. When the second coat went up, I was unsure but starting to get excited. By the third coat, I was in love and ready to decorate! Of course we kept the same bedroom set and the same bedspread because, well, we operate on a tight budget around here. BUT I was able to find some great deals on pillows from Ross and Pier 1; as well as a GREAT deal on my gray black-out curtains from Tuesday Morning.
The rest of our bedroom decor was found at consignment or antique shops! I’m in love with my antique lamps- one is from Finders Keepers in Floyd and one belonged to my sweet Nana and Poppy. I’m still on the lookout for other unique pieces to complete the look, but enough about décor - let me give you my top reasons for going dark and why you should consider it too!
1. It’s calming. I know people say that about light colored rooms too, but I think the dark color creates an even more calming atmosphere to fall asleep in.
2. It’s elegant and sexy. (I can say that, right?) Can you REALLY say that about a light color? I don’t think so.
3. It’s unique. You don’t see it very often and I like that.
4. It helps you sleep better. Especially if you have a job like Matt where you need to sleep during the day!
5. It’s fun to decorate. Everything just seems to pop and sparkle more!
Well, there you have it. What do you think? Would you consider painting a bedroom a dark color? If any of you pretty peeps decide to come to the dark side, I’d love to hear about it and see pics!
